BioPure Baikalin Powder is a powdered extract from the root of Scutellaria baicalensis,also known as Chinese Skullcap, Huang-Qin, or Baikal Skullcap. This herb is in the Lamiaceae (mint) family and gets its name from its blue to purplish-pink flowers that have a shape resembling a medieval knight’s helmet. The Chinese have used Scutellariain traditional medicine for over 2000 years. In Ayurvedic medicine, Scutellaria is considered a cooling herb.
Baicalin, and its close relative, baicalein, are the primary bioactive flavonoid compounds found in the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis. Baicalin has been shown to offer various pharmacological effects in research, including protection against free radical damage, inflammation modulating, neuroprotective, and immune system support. Of particular interest is Baicalin’s beneficial effects on the central nervous system, which has promising development in research on neurodegeneration, compulsive behavior, nervousness, and low mood.
Baicalin has a unique ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier, and thus can facilitate targeted delivery of neuroprotective effects to the brain. Additional effects studied with promising results include increasing blood circulation, reducing the rate of mutation in cells, calming the nervous system, protecting chondrocytes, and memory-enhancing.
Studies have shown baicalin strengthening our body’s natural defenses against harmful invaders by interfering with the interactions of cell envelope proteins. In this way, it disrupts the binding and reception process that retroviruses use to gain access to a host’s cells.
