Research indicates that biofilms may be the culprit of most treatment-resistant Lyme disease. In 2002, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) noted that biofilms accounted” for over 80 percent of microbial infections in the body.” One of our favorite parts about Cytogen is that it helps the body get rid of biofilms! This may be due to the fact that it contains ginseng, beetroot, shilajit, and stevia rebaudiana. These each have proved effective in the reduction of biofilms! According to a study published in FEMS Immunology & Medical Microbiology, “ginseng treatment may help to eradicate the biofilm-associated chronic infections caused by P. aeruginosa.” Beetroot is rich in nitrates, which your body converts into nitric oxide (NO), which is an important messenger molecule in biological systems (1). Many studies have proven Nitric Oxide to be effective in biofilm dispersal among various bacterial species (2)(3)(4). Shilajit is an antioxidant known as fulvic acid. Fulvic acid has been shown to inhibit early S. mutans biofilm formation (5). Recent studies have additionally shown that fulvic acid is shown to be fungicidal, acting through disruption of the cell membrane activity (6) and is minimally affected by characterized biofilm resistance mechanisms, including the extracellular matrix (ECM) and efflux pumps (7). Beyond that, we have Stevia. According to research published in The European Journal of Microbiology and Immunology, stevia is “very effective in reducing attached Borrelia biofilm mass on both plastic and collagen coated surfaces by ~40% whereas the individual antibiotics actually induced the size of the biofilm mass” (8).
